Hot and cold. Dark and light. Sweet and sour. With one comes the other.  Except what happens when that is you? Like these antonyms, my world is one where flowers can grow from headstones, and bees can lay kisses on little children’s cheeks. Anything is possible where I come from.

 

I’m in my backyard. The sweet, dark aroma of the open-armed magnolia blossom draws me toward it. This gorgeous flower seems all too delicate to be held in my hands. As I caress it, I think back to the time when this tree held my brother and me everyday after school. She was a maternal figure, bending her branches and tolerating our tinkering and games. Small and somewhat brittle, this tree had no business holding two children.  She was meant to be a pit stop for mourning doves and the occasional cardinal, not a pair of sun-stained blonde-haired, blue-eyed thrill seekers who desired peace and quietude....
