My father is a cat. Not because he is as nimble, agile, or lazy as a cat, but because it feels like he has nine lives. My father has had type one diabetes for fifty-seven years; he has had stage two colon cancer; he has had two toes amputated on his right foot and his left foot amputated as well; and those just begin to scratch the surface. For the seventeen years I have been on this earth, I have been by his side, taking care of him when he’s bedridden, carrying him up the stairs when he broke his leg for the fourth time, and even sleeping with him in the hospital when he was diagnosed with colon cancer. There were many hours of arduously sitting in the hospital with him. Countless weekends consisted of lying at the end of his hospital bed watching Sunday football. There were days when instead of going to school for math help, I would go to my dad’s bedroom and ask him questions about the Pythagorean theorem....
